Janitors Win Arbitration over Healthcare
Arbitrator Orders ABM to Pay Back Janitors
Last Year janitors stood together to win affordable healthcare for ourselves and our families. In our contract all the Companies agreed to reduce the monthly premiums and to offer either the union health plan, or an equal plan of their own.
ABM tried to make a profit by giving us WORSE health insurance! Instead of helping their employees who are sick, ABM decided to save money by switching to a cheaper health plan, that was not equal to the union health plan they agreed to in the contract. Stuck with big bills, angry janitors got together and filed a grievance to stop ABM from cheating us!
Now an Arbitrator has ruled that ABM violated our union contract when it offered a health insurance plan that was not equal to the union plan. This is a huge victory towards improving our health insurance and forcing the companies to live up to what they agreed to last year: But our battle is not over there are some important next steps:
1. Bring your Hospital Bills to the Union Hall: For any hospital bills since July 1st, 2007 that are higher than they should be under the union plan, ABM will pay the difference. This only applies to ABM members who are on the single insurance plan, and you must bring proof of your bills to the union hall.
2. We renegotiate the coverage of the Union plan with the employers this spring, and this arbitration will help us pressure the companies to accept a better plan.
This is an important step on our path to get the health insurance we deserve!
