1) Union Executive Board Creates New Solidarity Fund

Members who are sick with COVID-19 or in quarantine due to COVID-19, are now eligible to receive up to $300 in emergency aid, and $800 for members who pass away as a result of COVID.

2) Healthcare for the Unemployed is Extended Through June 30th

COVID-19 Update – (April 16, 2020)

One month has passed since Governor Walz declared a peacetime emergency (March 13th) and it has been three weeks of #StayHomeMn with only essential workers working in the Twin Cities. Employers have had plenty of time to figure out how to supply our workers with personal protective equipment. They have had plenty of time to figure out how to pay workers a wage differential in exchange for putting their health and their family’s health at risk. Many union members are saying they have not received masks or gloves, and most members said they NEED hazard/essential pay because we are on the frontline. This is not right. COVID-19 Update – (April 13, 2020)

Those of us who are not laid off now must report to work every day in an environment that could be dangerous to our health. As essential workers, we are asked to do our part, but the companies must also do their part: they must tell us immediately if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 at our worksites and take immediate steps to protect us. We have already seen multiple cases where employers are slow to tell workers the truth, in one case even pretending that the employee was “on vacation.” As the sick worker in this case put it: “you cannot cover the sun with your thumb”. Union Healthcare Fund Extends Coverage
Through May 31st for Laid off Workers!

As union workers we are vulnerable to the corona virus the same as any worker. The difference is that union workers are not alone, and we have resources and a voice in how we and our companies react to this crisis. One powerful example of this in the first 3 weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic is that we control our own union health insurance fund.
