Those of us who are not laid off now must report to work every day in an environment that could be dangerous to our health. As essential workers, we are asked to do our part, but the companies must also do their part: they must tell us immediately if there is a confirmed case of COVID-19 at our worksites and take immediate steps to protect us. We have already seen multiple cases where employers are slow to tell workers the truth, in one case even pretending that the employee was “on vacation.” As the sick worker in this case put it: “you cannot cover the sun with your thumb”. As union workers we are vulnerable to the corona virus the same as any worker. The difference is that union workers are not alone, and we have resources and a voice in how we and our companies react to this crisis.
